The reciprocating or piston compressor creates compressed air by the constant moving back and forth of the piston located in the compression chamber.

The rotary screw compressor creates compressed air by rotating two inter-meshed rotors while the rotary sliding vane compressor uses its movable rotor blade. Finally, the centrifugal compressor uses an impeller mounted on a shaft to create compressed air.

There are two types of air compressor pumps, oil lubed and oil-less. The oil-less system has more technical development though is relatively more expensive, louder, and last for less time.
